Helambu valley

Helambu is located in 80km North of Kathmandu which begins from Lauribina la pass and continues down to Melamchi valley. Hyolmo people (Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung) lives in this highland valley which is popular trekking destination for all aged people. Helambu is famous for its sweet potato production, Buddhist monasteries, Sherpa and Tamang communities, diversity, terrace farming, diverse landscape, and Mountain View in the Horizon.

What to expect in the Helambu trek?

Helambu trek targets Helambu valley with a maximum elevation of 3490m at Tharepati. You will walk on easy to moderately difficult path through forests, rocky landscapes and landslide zones. The rhododendron forest, mountains, uphills and downhills, stone paved stairs and off beaten trial makes your each day adventurous.

You will explore Buddhist monasteries, ethnic villages, Tamang, Gurung, and Sherpa culture during the trek. The Helambu trekking route begins from Shivapuri National park and reach Langtang national park with exploring its serene beauty. A completely peaceful path with natural music of air, flowing river, creeping of birds become a source of recreation.

Helambu trek itinerary includes 7 days on which first day is your arrival day and last day is for departure.

On the second day of your trek, you will drive from Thamel to Sundarijal. The Helambu trekking route begins from Sundarijal. The Shivapuri National Park welcomes you with its pleasant beauty and sources of water for Kathmandu valley. You will reach Chisapani walking through the forest and grassland of Shivapuri Nagarjun National park.

On the third day you will trek from Chisapani to Khutumsang village which gives a pleasant view of the Langtang Mountains. Following uphills and downhills on the forest path, you will reach Tharepati (3690m), the highest elevation of Helambu Valley on the fourth day of your trek. On the fifth day of your trek, you will pass Melamchi village, Buddhist stupas, Tarke Ghyang, and Helambu village. On the sixth day, you will reach Sermanthang passing different Sherpa villages and Melamchi bazaar, and return back to Kathmandu.

Itinerary

After your arrival at Kathmandu Airport, we will welcome you and take you to the hotel in a private car. In the evening, you will meet your guide and get a briefing on your trek. You will have a welcome dinner in a cultural restaurant. 

You will have your breakfast, and we will drive to Sundarijal in a private car. It will take 1 hour to reach Sundarjal from Thamel. The Helambu trekking route begins uphill from Shivapuri. We will pass Mulkharka, a Tamang settlement in the center of Shivapuri National Park, and continue towards Chisapani. After walking for around 6 to 7 hours in the Shivapuri landscape through forests and meadows, we will reach Chisapani.

We will wake up early in the morning and reach Chisapani View Point for a sunrise view. After enjoying the sunrise view, we will return to the tea house, have breakfast, and then start the trek. We will walk through meadows, terraced farmland, Pathi Bhanjyang, and Gul Bhanjyang to reach Kutumsang.

After having breakfast in Khutumsang, we will head towards Tharepati in the north direction. The snow covered peaks shine on the horizon after walking on the steep trail in Rhododendron Forest. We will reach Yurin Danda and enjoy the stunning views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, and Gaurishankar Himal. After walking for around 6 to 7 hours, we will reach Tharepati, passing Magen Goth at meadows.

After having breakfast in Tharepati, we will trek towards Melamchi village in the east. We will pass different monasteries, stupas, and shrines reflecting Buddhism in the Sherpas, Tamang, and Gurung communities. It takes around six hours to reach Tarke Ghyang, the oldest monastery of Helambu region. 

We will start our trek after having breakfast at Tarke Ghyang. Today’s trek will extend to Melmchi Bazar, which takes around 5 hours. We will pass the dense forest, streams, waterfalls, and small Hyolmo villages between Parachin and Gangyul. After walking further for an hour, we will reach Sermanthang and have our lunch. Catching the bus from Sermanthang, we will drive back to Kathmandu, passing Melamchi Bazar and the Melamchi River. In the evening we will have farewell dinner with company members. 

Next day after arriving from Kathmandu you can fly back to your country or continue other trekking destination depending on your holidays. Our company member will takes you to airport depending on your departure time.

No, a restricted area permit is not required for the Helambu trek because Helambu does not lies in a restricted area.

The best time for the Helambu trek is spring (mid-March, April, May, mid-June) and autumn (mid-September, October, mid-November). The weather remains pleasant and the temperature remains moderate during autumn and spring.

Helambu trek is easy trek and highest elevation is only 3600m beginners can also do Helambu trek. if you have trekking experience that’s but it is not necessary to have trekking experience for this trek.

You should be mentally and physically fit for Helambu trek. Since you should trek around 5-6 hours each day and there is no rest day for acclimatization, best physical fitness is required

We can get Nepalese, Tibetan, continental and indian food varieties in helambu trekking route. Most commonly we can get Nepali thali for Lunch and dinner. Company will provide you three meal i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner.In breakfast potato, bread tea or coffee, boiled egg or omlet, jam or honey is available. In dinner and lunch you can get chowmein, pizza, fried rice, nepali thali (rice, lentils, curry pickle and pappad). Menu will be provided but sometime we maynot get all the food as in menu.

Helambu is 80 kilometer far from Kathmandu.

Helambu trekking route is moderate trekking route where you will get easy to difficult cliffs, forest path and rocky passes. You can easily complete the trek if you are physically fit and trained in walking uphill and downills.

You will get normal tea houses with clean room in Helambu. Attached rooms are not available. Toilets will be outside from your room.

Yes, you can customize the Helambu trek by diverting the trek towards Langtang Valley from Tharepati and visit Gosaikunda as well. The trekking days will extends in customizing the trek.

No, it is not possible to do Helambu trek in winter and summer. In the summer season heavy rainfall occurs in Nepal and there is a high chance of landslides in the Sindupalchok district. Similarly leech, slippery path, and rain cover makes trekking difficult in summer (June, July, August).Snowfall and severe cold temperature makes trekking difficult in winter.

Helambu trek is a short trek near Kathmandu and starts from Sundarijal after an hour drive from Thamel. You will spend complete five days in trekking site and return back to Kathmandu from Melamchi bazzar in car. The Helambu trek itinerary includes six nights and seven days on which day 1 and day 7 is for arrival and departure respectively. You will spend four nights in trekking zones and two nights in Kathmandu.

Best time for Helambu trek

Best time for Helambu trek is spring and the autumn seasons. The months of March, April and May to mid-June of spring season is best for scenic beauty. You can have wonderful view of rhododendron, the national flower of Nepal in spring season. The pleasant weather, moderate temperature and clear vision of mountains and Himalaya is amazing.

From mid-September, October, November and mid - December during autumn season also the weather remain pleasant and you can have best view of mountain and Himalayas.

Accommodation in the Helambu valley trek

You will get normal tea houses providing good food and clean rooms in resting places of Helambu valley trek. Attached room is not available and toilets remain outside your room. Warm blankets are available but we prefer you to bring sleeping bag.

Food and drinking water

We will provide three meal i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner during the trek. Breakfast contain bread, Tibetan bread, chapatti, curry, potato, tea or coffee, egg items. Dinner and breakfast includes noodles, chowmein, macroni, nepali thali (rice, lentils, pickles, curry and papad). You can get mineral water for drinking. Also you can request hot water in tea house. You should pay extra charge for hot water.

Charging gadgets

Charging facility is available in teahouse but you should charge in dining hall. Charging will not be available in room. You should bring your power bank so that you can charge your gadget in necessity.

Network and internet

You can get network throughout the trek leaving some exceptional places. You can get Wi-Fi access in some tea house and can use mobile data through the trek.

Visa

Visit visa is required for trekking in Nepal. You can get visit visa in airport or directly from your nearby Nepal embassy. 15 days visa is enough for Helambu trek.

General Clothing
